D-Tech RST & Segofs Energy Services Sets Record, Achieving Directional Requirements and Overcoming Flow-Rate Limitations/Unstable Hole Conditions

  • THE CHALLENGE

    • Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), the national oil company in Nigeria, needed a reliable and robust rotary steerable system to drill a challenging 12 ¼-in. hole section.
    • Based on offset wells, they were anticipating multiple drilling problems on the Oredo-20 development well, including poor hole cleaning, possibility of stuck pipe, and lost circulation.
    • There was also the potential for flow-rate constraints due to rig pump and pressure limitations.
  • THE SOLUTION

    • After consulting with the operator and Segofs Energy Services, the D-Tech Rotary Steerable team recommended its RST900 configuration based on an expected flow-rate of 775 to 800 gpm.
    • While drilling, the actual flow-rate range was 700 to 750 gpm. Even with this limitation, the RST met all directional requirements and maintained inclination when required.
    • Throughout the run, the RST accumulated more than 154 drilling and circulating hours.
  • THE BENEFIT

    • The 6,116-ft section was delivered in one run, making it the longest RST run for NPDC.
    • The RST completed 92.31 drilling hours, with an average ROP of 66.25 ft/hr and allowed the depth of the section to be extended, which permitted conventional drilling in the 8 ½-in. section.
    • Because the run was successful, the operator didn’t have to use more time-consuming conventional methods and was provided with a far-less tortuous well path.
