First Geosteered 6-in. Lateral Successfully Completed in a Single Run for UK Operator Using D-Tech’s RST475

  • THE CHALLENGE

    • A UK operator wanted to develop the Weald Basin in Southern England by drilling its first 6-in. lateral through the challenging Portland sandstone formation.
    • To meet their objectives, the customer required precise geosteering through the long section, while minimizing torque and drag and excess tortuosity, which conventional assemblies traditionally struggle to achieve.
    • D-Tech’s rotary steerable tool (RST) was chosen to drill the lateral, since it has a proven track record with the directional drilling provider and the D-Tech robust downlinking process would still work with the mechanical pumps of the rig being used.
  • THE SOLUTION

    • Having reviewed the project, the D-Tech team recommended its RST475 tool, in conjunction with a 4 ¾-in. LS STX motor, to optimize the bottomhole assembly (BHA) design.
    • Throughout the run, 24 downlinks were transmitted while drilling ahead, with no loss of rig time.
    • By consistently responding to the geosteering commands in real time, they were able to make rapid directional adjustments and stay in the zone 100% of the time.
  • THE BENEFIT

    • The D-Tech RSS finished the lateral in a single run at a rate of penetration (ROP) that was 70% faster than planned.
    • The tool’s 100% downlink success rate and the swift trajectory response to these downlinks allowed the customer to accurately geosteer the well, maximizing the exposure to the reservoir.
    • Use of the D-Tech RSS allowed the customer to safely, accurately, and cost-effectively complete its first lateral in the Weald Basin in one run.
