D-Tech Rotary Steerable System Helps Midland Basin Operator Set Longest Footage in One Run Record

  • THE CHALLENGE

    • An independent operator drilling in the deep Wolfcamp formation in the Midland Basin wanted to reduce trips and increase their rate of penetration (ROP) as they were completing the end of the lateral.
    • The customer tried different combinations of larger motors and more aggressive bits; however, they still struggled with excessive slide times and BHA component failures toward the end of the lateral.
    • In an effort to get to total depth (TD) faster, the customer contacted D-Tech to run their 8 ½-in. rotary steerable system (RSS).

  • THE SOLUTION

    • After collaborating with the customer and understanding their challenges and goals, the D-Tech team recommended a customized BHA and hydraulic setup.
    • Once the D-Tech RSS was in the hole, a D-Tech representative provided onsite best operating parameters to ensure optimal performance and minimize NPT.
    • The D-Tech system successfully drilled the three-mile lateral (14,593 ft) to TD, at a record ROP, with no trips/in one BHA.

  • THE BENEFIT

    • The majority of the run was drilled in azimuth and inclination control steering mode, which reduced downlinks and decision-making time, allowing for increased ROP.
    • D-Tech set a record by completing the longest and fastest one-run RSS lateral in the Permian at 156 ft/hr. This run beat the previous record held by a competitor tool by 43 ft/hr and out-drilled them by 2,649 ft.
    • The record run, which stayed in the sweet spot 100% of the time, saved the operator more than $226,000 compared to the offset well drilled with a competitor’s tool.
    • The customer stated that D-Tech is now their tool of choice after this run.
