D-Tech Rotary Steerable & Almansoori Complete a Challenging 8 ½-in. Section in the Abu EL Gharadig Basin

  • THE CHALLENGE

    • An operator in Egypt required a reliable and robust rotary steerable system to drill a challenging 8 ½-in. hole section.
    • Multiple drilling problems were anticipated, including possible losses, potential tight-hole due to shale, differential sticking, and abrasive sand formation.
    • The well plan consisted of kicking off from vertical and building to 16.3° with 2.0°/100 ft DLS and holding a tangent until TD.
  • THE SOLUTION

    • After consulting with the D-Tech International operating team, a RST675 configuration and hydraulic setup were recommended to achieve optimal steering performance.
    • The BHA delivered an average controlled DLS of 1.7°/100 ft and maintaining inclination and azimuth while drilling the tangent, meeting all directional requires and targets.
    • Whilst drilling the severely abrasive sands and managing stickslip, there was no reduction in directional steering performance.
  • THE BENEFIT

    • The D-Tech RST drilled 3.525 ft and accumulated more than 97 D&C hours, 59.3 drilling hours, and an average ROP of 59.2 ft/hr.
    • Running the RST provided a far less tortuous wellpath, as evidenced by a smooth wiper trip carried out at TD, and time saved as a dedicated conditioning trip was not required.
