D-Tech RSS Successfully Completes Its First Geothermal Wells For Operator in The Netherlands

  • THE CHALLENGE

    • An operator in The Netherlands needed to reliably and safely drill the 12 1/4-in. section of five geothermal wells from shoe to TD.
    • The well plan consisted of a build section from 0 to 60 deg, with a DLS of 2.5 deg/10m, and a hold tangent section to TD.
  • THE SOLUTION

    • The D-Tech Rotary Steerable RST900 rotary steerable was used to drill the curve section.
    • After stick-slip and low ROP were observed on the first well, the customer decided to include a BICO Drilling Tools 9 5/8-in. SSS100 drilling motor and the DSI FZE 8 1/4-in. PBL sub in the BHA.
    • Subsequent runs saw a vast reduction in stick-slip and improved ROP.
  • THE BENEFIT

    • A combination of magnetic and gravity-steering modes was utilized, and INC hold modes were used to remain within 1 deg of target inclination during the tangent, resulting in a smooth less tortuous well profile.
    • The combined D-Tech, BICO, and DSI FZE BHA allowed the customer to successfully complete this project, saving downtime and operational costs.
    • 8254.5m were drilled over the seven runs in 814.2 D&C hrs. The highest DLS was 4.42 deg/10m.
