Rotary steerable systems (RSS) have long been accepted as a go-to solution for directional drilling in high-cost, offshore environments. The risk of utilizing these complex, precise devices has been outweighed by the promises of better navigation to the intended target, increased rates of penetration (ROP), and continuous rotation to minimize stuck pipe events. However, even in offshore markets, reliance on RSS is not risk-free and costly. Downhole failure rates can be high, leading to an increase in nonproductive time (NPT) and lost-hole charges that can exceed $1.5 million per tool.

For this technology to be effective in a high-volume, land-drilling market, the systems must work within a tighter economic model and conform to a different risk profile. To increase adoption and utilization among operators on land, multiple companies have developed fleets of purpose-built rotary steerable tools that promise reduced operational costs while producing the expected benefits offshore operators have enjoyed with more complex systems.

Reduce Downtime with A Simplistic Tool Design

Fewer moving parts and fewer parts overall improve tool reliability by removing failure points from the assembly. An at average of 12 to 13-feet long, the D-Tech RSS tool has been designed with just 10 moving parts. It employs a universal electronics control assembly to drive interchangeability between tool sizes. Simplicity in design translates into efficiency throughout the supply chain, including raw material procurement, component machining, assembly and inspection, sourcing of precision electronics and sensors, and controlling the QC process.

To reduce NPT while downhole, the fully rotating push-the-bit system is ruggedized for high vibration and shock, tackles abrasive formations that are known to be hard on tools, and is compatible with challenging mud systems. By virtually eliminating downhole lithium batteries, limitations on time below the rotary as well as HSE risks are minimized.

The system’s high dogleg capability helps build angle quickly and get to the lateral faster, with consistent and predictable build rates. Drilling longer wells with improved precision and hole quality means you can get casing to bottom faster, lowering your drilling costs.

The D-Tech system employs a highly accurate directional package that is positioned only four feet from the bit. This flexible system allows you to run your preferred MWD system and bit of choice. Easy to pick up and easy to use, the system arrives at the wellsite pre-configured to minimize operational errors and increase downhole performance.

Reducing Operational Errors at the Wellsite

Prior to tool configuration and field deployment, D-Tech engineers collaborate with customers and the directional service company to discuss the proposed well plan. Before an RSS tool is shipped to the wellsite, it is programmed in-house and preconfigured for the client’s intended well profile and application.

Upon arrival, it is immediately ready for use, simplifying pre-job testing and minimizing rig time spent with tool pickup and bottomhole assembly (BHA) configuration. During drilling operations, tool performance is continuously monitored by engineers in our real-time operations center. Effective communication between the operations center and the rig increases drilling performance, drives up tool reliability, and reduces undesirable tool damage from exceeding recommended specifications.

Efficiency and Precision in R&M

Each D-Tech RSS system undergoes a complete teardown and rebuild after each job. Plug-and-play functionality allows D-Tech to return RSS tools to operational status quickly. By reducing system complexity and removing failure points, repair and maintenance (R&M) cycles are improved and sensor inspection, testing, and certification is streamlined. Fast tool turnaround (in less than a day) delivers high asset efficiency, which minimizes downtime and maximizes fleet availability.

An Easy-to-Understand Pricing Model

D-Tech’s pricing and business models are simplified, too. In addition to the system’s competitive day rate, we believe in pricing transparency and communication throughout the process so there’s no surprises. Once the tools are returned for R&M, inspection is immediate and post-job invoicing is timely.

Summary

The penalty for using traditional offshore RSS systems in onshore drilling situations has been high cost and low reliability. Most purpose-built RSS systems for land have seen mixed success, failing to deliver on the promise of lower cost and better reliability.
